Rico Geothermal on the agenda for Sept 3 Thermal Energy Network presentation at Telluride

· Geothermal
Telluride CO geothermal conference Sept 3, 2025

Afternoon in-depth workshops

Evening panel discussion with Q&A

Thermal energy network experts from Massachusetts will describe natural gas-to-geothermal conversion

Agenda below includes speakers from HEET, a group in Massachusetts which promotes replacing natural gas with water for use as the low-temperature heat source for geothermal heat pumps at homes and businesses. HEET does not propose drilling deep wells to tap higher-temperature geothermal reservoirs. Instead, the heat source is shallow wells drilled to depths where earth temperture is constant in the 50-degree F range..

A video at HEET website describes this concept.

The Rico geothermal energy network proposes a deep well to access a higher temperatures which, when distributed in thermal energy network pipes, may improve efficiency of geothermal heat pumps at customer premises.

Event Details

Date: September 3rd

Location: Telluride Science and Innovation Center

Workshops: Start at 2:00 PM. Public event starts at 6:30 (doors open at 6:00 PM)

Cost: FREE and open to the public

Why you'll want to attend: We'll hear from leading experts including Eric Bosworth (who led the first utility-deployed networked geothermal project in the US) and Zeyneb Magavi from HEET, who will share real-world insights from their operating thermal energy network in Massachusetts.

Local relevance: This technology is particularly timely for our region, as we're currently exploring TENs projects in both Rico and Mountain Village. This is a great opportunity to learn about the technology from the experts who are making it happen.

The panel discussion will be followed by Q&A, so bring your questions!

IN-DEPTH SESSIONS
space limited

2:00 – 2:50 Session 1
Eric Bosworth - Thermal Energy Insights

What is a thermal energy network and when will it outperform other heating and cooling systems?

- break -

3:00 – 3:50 Session 2

  • Bryce Carter, Program Manager, Colorado Energy Office
  • Chris Hansen, La Plata Electric Association
  • Andrew Iliff, Policy Director HEET

How can thermal energy networks (TENS) benefit an electric utility? What are the broader institutional and regulatory considerations for TENS in Colorado and elsewhere?

- break -

4:00 – 4:50 Session 3
Zeyneb Magavi, Executive Director, HEET

A thermal energy network in Framingham, Massachusetts. Lessons learned from the first year of operation.
(HEET plans to issue a report with the findings from the first year of operation in late August, so the timing here should be good).
