Book loans from other libraries will arrive faster in Rico starting January 2024

Rico Public Library patrons may have waited weeks for books requested from other libraries to arrive at Rico in recent months. The delay should be reduced starting January 2024.

The Dolores County Library Board changed the inter-library book loan exchange schedule for Rico's library from weekly to monthly in July 2023, according to Rico librarian Susan Robertson. Susan travels to Dolores Public Library (in Town of Dolores) to pick up books requested by Rico library patrons, and to deliver books for loan to other Colorado libraries participating in the inter-library exchange program.

Dolores County Public Library incurs an expense each time Rico Public Library travels to Dolores Public Library for the inter-library book exchange, Susan explained to Ore Cart October 7. Rico was sending more books out to other libraries than it requested from other libraries, and the Dolores County Library Board considered this weekly expense was benefiting other libraries at the expense of Dolores County.

But the monthly schedule was not working for Rico library patrons, nor patrons of other libraries requesting books from Rico. If a library patron requested a book loan a few days after Susan made a round-trip to Dolores for the monthly exchange, the patron could wait a month for the next Rico-to-Dolores book exchange.

Susan explained this issue to the Dolores County Library board members at its October 6, 2023 meeting at Rico Public Library. Board members agreed to switch back to the weekly exchange schedule beginning January 2024.

Between now and the end of 2023, Rico Public Library will investigate book loan exchange transport options which may be less costly compared to the Rico-Dolores round-trip:

  • Wilkinson Public Library at Telluride may become the “community drop” book exchange site for Rico.
  • use public transportation or personal vehicles to Telluride for book exchanges with Wilkinson Public Library.

The Dolores County government 2023 budget allocates $158,284 to the Dolores County Library Fund, which includes funds to operate Rico Public Library.
